Getting around the Bronx
The Bronx is the only borough on the mainland. Water is on three sides. The Harlem River and the Hudson are to the west, and the East River and Long Island Sound to the south and east. To the north, the Bronx borders Westchester County at Yonkers, Mount Vernon and Pelham. Riverdale and Throgs Neck are at opposite ends of the borough, and the trip between them is slow east-to-west traffic, with no bridge to cross.
The streets change across the borough. The Grand Concourse starts at 138th Street as a wide boulevard with a service road on each side. Tell us which road your door faces. In Mott Haven and Melrose, the numbered streets are short and one-way. Out east, Pelham Bay, Country Club and City Island feel like a small coastal town. City Island has one bridge and one main road, City Island Avenue.
Getting to the airports from the Bronx
LaGuardia is across the water in East Elmhurst, and it's the closest airport to almost every Bronx address. From the south Bronx, we take the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge onto the Grand Central Parkway. From the east Bronx, we take the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge and the Whitestone Expressway. JFK is farther south. The usual route is the Bruckner Expressway, the Whitestone Bridge and the Van Wyck, or the Throgs Neck Bridge and the Cross Island Parkway to the Belt Parkway.
Newark Liberty is west on the Cross Bronx Expressway to the George Washington Bridge, then south on the New Jersey Turnpike. Teterboro, the airport for private and corporate jets in Bergen County, is over the same bridge and then west. The Cross Bronx is slow in both directions for much of the day. If your schedule is tight, leave earlier.
Yankee Stadium and the Bronx Zoo
Yankee Stadium is at 161st Street and River Avenue, with the Major Deegan Expressway on one side and the Grand Concourse a few blocks uphill. On game and concert nights, the streets around the gates jam. Meet your car two or three blocks away on the Concourse or Jerome Avenue. The Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden face each other across Fordham Road and Southern Boulevard. Each has more than one gate for cars. Tell us which one when you book. Fordham University's Rose Hill campus is on the same road.
Arthur Avenue in Belmont is the restaurant street. It's narrow and busy on weekend evenings. Van Cortlandt Park is in the northwest corner and Pelham Bay Park in the northeast, with one road out to Orchard Beach. Riverdale and Fieldston are on the hill above the Hudson, on steep, wooded lanes that are easy to miss at night. Give us the nearest cross street, and tell us if your door is on the street or up a private drive.
North and east Bronx
North of Fordham Road, the Bronx is hilly and residential. Bedford Park, Norwood, Woodlawn, Wakefield and Williamsbridge go up to the Westchester line, with Woodlawn Cemetery and Van Cortlandt Park between them. Metro-North stops at Fordham, Botanical Garden, Williams Bridge, Woodlawn and Wakefield. Lehman College is on Bedford Park Boulevard and Bronx Community College on University Avenue. Wave Hill is in Riverdale, above the Hudson. Mosholu Parkway, Pelham Parkway and the Bronx River Parkway serve this area, and all three are slow.
On the east side, Soundview, Castle Hill and Clason Point are on peninsulas between the Bronx River and the Sound. Parkchester is its own small grid next to the Cross Bronx, and Bay Plaza and Co-op City are in the northeast corner by the Hutchinson River Parkway. Hunts Point, at the south end, has the food market that supplies much of the city, and the market's day starts in the middle of the night. Webster Avenue, Boston Road, White Plains Road and Tremont Avenue are the main local roads.

Questions
Questions about Bronx pickups
How does a Yankee Stadium pickup work?
We agree on a meeting point a few blocks from the gates, on the Grand Concourse or Jerome Avenue. The streets by River Avenue and the Major Deegan ramps fill up as the crowd leaves, and a car waiting there can't move. For a whole evening with a stop before or after the game, book by the hour.
Where should a car meet me at the Bronx Zoo or the Botanical Garden?
At the gate you tell us when you book. With the gate on the booking, your car waits on the right side of the road.
Which airport is nearest to a Bronx address?
LaGuardia, from almost every part of the borough. From the south Bronx we take the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge and the Grand Central Parkway, and from the east Bronx the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge and the Whitestone Expressway. JFK is farther. Newark Liberty and Teterboro both mean crossing the George Washington Bridge.
Which parts of the Bronx do you cover?
All of it. In the northwest: Riverdale, Fieldston, Kingsbridge and Spuyten Duyvil. In the south: Mott Haven, Port Morris, Melrose and Hunts Point. Through the middle: Fordham, Belmont, Bedford Park and Norwood. In the east: Throgs Neck, Pelham Bay, Country Club, Co-op City, City Island and Morris Park.
