Fifth Avenue to the East River, 59th Street to 96th
The Upper East Side runs from 59th Street to 96th Street, and from Fifth Avenue along Central Park east to the river. Lenox Hill covers the sixties and seventies, Carnegie Hill the upper eighties and nineties near the park, and Yorkville the blocks east of Third Avenue in the eighties and nineties. Sutton Place is just south of 59th Street.
The avenues here are one-way, and that matters for a pickup. Fifth Avenue runs south, Madison Avenue north, Lexington south and Third north. Park Avenue runs both ways, with a planted median that limits left turns. Two addresses one block apart on Fifth and Madison are reached from opposite directions. Give us the avenue and the cross street. Most buildings have a doorman, and we pick up at the canopy. If yours has more than one, tell us which.
The closest Manhattan neighborhood to LaGuardia
The FDR Drive runs along this side of the island, and the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge connects it straight to the Grand Central Parkway. That puts LaGuardia about 8 miles from Lenox Hill or Yorkville. You get on the FDR in the sixties or at 96th Street. The entrance depends on your cross street.
To JFK, we take the Queens-Midtown Tunnel or the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge at 59th Street, then the Long Island Expressway and the Van Wyck. Going west is harder. Newark Liberty and Teterboro start with a crossing of the island. We take the 79th or 86th Street transverse through Central Park to the West Side Highway and the Lincoln Tunnel, or 96th Street to the Henry Hudson Parkway and the George Washington Bridge. On weekday mornings, the transverse through the park is usually the slowest part.
Museum Mile and evening events
Fifth Avenue above 82nd Street is Museum Mile. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is at 82nd Street, the Neue Galerie at 86th, the Guggenheim at 89th, the Cooper Hewitt at 91st and the Jewish Museum at 92nd. The Frick Collection is farther south at 70th Street. On a gala night, hundreds of cars line up on Fifth, a one-way avenue with the park on one side. Get dropped off on Madison Avenue and walk through the side street. It's usually faster than the line on Fifth.
Away from Fifth, the Asia Society is at Park Avenue and 70th Street, Hunter College at Lexington and 68th, the 92nd Street Y at Lexington and 92nd, and Bloomingdale's at 59th and Lexington. Carl Schurz Park and Gracie Mansion are at the east end, at East End Avenue and 88th Street, and the Roosevelt Island Tramway leaves from Second Avenue at 59th.
Hospitals on York Avenue
Between about 66th and 71st Streets, York Avenue has several major medical centers within a few blocks: NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering and Rockefeller University. Lenox Hill Hospital is farther west, near 77th Street. Each has its own driveway or entrance. Give us the building name and the department as well as the address.
For an appointment, book by the hour. For a morning consultation, a wait and a ride home, your chauffeur waits nearby. You don't have to call for a second car when you're done.
East of Third Avenue
East of Third Avenue, First and Second Avenues are busy and full of shops, and York and East End Avenues are quieter. The East River Esplanade runs behind them above the FDR Drive, with John Jay Park and Cherokee Place at 77th Street. Sotheby's is on York Avenue at 72nd Street. The FDR entrances are in the low sixties and at 96th Street. From Yorkville in the eighties, we drive to one of them first.
At the south end, the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge has two roadways, and its Manhattan ramps come out at 59th and 60th Streets by Bloomingdale's. On weekday evenings that corner is very busy. Temple Emanu-El is at Fifth Avenue and 65th, and the Central Park Zoo is in the park at 64th. At the north end, Mount Sinai starts just above 96th Street on Fifth Avenue.

Questions
Questions about Upper East Side pickups
Can you pick me up at a hospital entrance?
Yes. The hospitals on York Avenue each have their own driveway and more than one door. Give us the building name and the department. If you don't know when the appointment will end, book by the hour and the car will wait nearby.
What address detail helps most on these blocks?
The avenue, the cross street and the canopy. The avenues are one-way. A door on Fifth and a door on Madison on the same block are reached from different directions. Park Avenue's median blocks most left turns. And on the long blocks between Fifth and Lexington, a building can be closer to the other cross street than to the one in its address.
Which airport is quickest from the Upper East Side?
LaGuardia, about 8 miles by the FDR Drive and the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, and it costs less than the other three. JFK is through Queens, by the Queensboro Bridge or the Midtown Tunnel. Newark Liberty and Teterboro both start by crossing Central Park, and that's the part of the trip that varies most.
Where does the Upper East Side start and end?
From 59th Street to 96th Street, and from Fifth Avenue to the East River. That includes Lenox Hill, Carnegie Hill, Yorkville and Museum Mile. Above 96th and below 59th, see our Manhattan page. The other side of Central Park is the Upper West Side.
