Central Park West to the Hudson, 59th Street to 110th

The Upper West Side runs from 59th Street to 110th Street, and from Central Park west to the Hudson River. Six long avenues run north to south: Central Park West, Columbus Avenue, Amsterdam Avenue, Broadway, West End Avenue and Riverside Drive above Riverside Park. Lincoln Square is in the low sixties around Lincoln Center, and Manhattan Valley is in the high nineties and low hundreds.

Broadway runs at an angle. It crosses Columbus Avenue at 65th Street and Amsterdam Avenue at 71st. So a Broadway address in the seventies is on the Amsterdam side of its block, and one in the low sixties is on the Columbus side. On Central Park West, the park side has no buildings. We pick up on the cross street.

Crossing Central Park

Cars can cross Central Park in only four places: 65th and 66th Streets, 79th Street, 86th Street and 97th Street. Every trip across town uses one of them. So a ride from West 88th Street to Park Avenue takes a different time at 9:00 AM than at 9:00 PM. Your chauffeur picks the crossing when planning the trip.

Going west and north is easy from here. The Henry Hudson Parkway follows the river from 72nd Street north to the George Washington Bridge. That makes Teterboro one of the easiest airport trips from Manhattan. Newark Liberty is the same river road south, as the West Side Highway below 72nd Street, to the Lincoln Tunnel and the New Jersey Turnpike. To LaGuardia, we cross at 96th or 97th Street to the Harlem River Drive or the FDR Drive, then take the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge and the Grand Central Parkway. JFK is the longest of the four. The route is down the West Side Highway to the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel and the Belt Parkway, or across town to the Queens-Midtown Tunnel and the Van Wyck.

Lincoln Center pickups

Lincoln Center covers the blocks from 62nd to 66th Street on Columbus Avenue. David Geffen Hall, the Metropolitan Opera House and the David H. Koch Theater are around the plaza, and the Juilliard School is across 65th Street. Shows often end at the same time, and for about 15 minutes afterward Columbus Avenue between 62nd and 66th barely moves. Get dropped off or picked up one block west, on Amsterdam Avenue. Jazz at Lincoln Center is a separate address, in the towers at Columbus Circle at 59th Street.

The American Museum of Natural History is on Central Park West between 77th and 81st Streets. It has its own entrances for cars, and the Rose Center is on the 81st Street side. On weekday mornings, many school groups arrive there. The New-York Historical Society is at 77th Street, and the Beacon Theatre is on Broadway at 74th.

Apartment buildings and canopies

Many of the apartment buildings on Central Park West are landmarks, like the Dakota at 72nd Street. Each has a canopy where the car stops, with no driveway. West End Avenue is almost all homes and quieter than Broadway, one block east. Riverside Drive runs along the park above the Hudson, and some entrances are set back behind a service road. The numbered streets between West End Avenue and Riverside Drive are narrow and one-way.

So a house number alone is rarely enough here. Give us the avenue, the cross street and which side of the street your canopy is on, especially after dark north of 86th Street.

Broadway and Riverside Park

Broadway is the neighborhood's main street. Verdi Square and Sherman Square are at 72nd Street by the subway, the Ansonia is at 73rd, Zabar's is at 80th and Symphony Space is at 95th. Fordham University's Lincoln Center campus is at Columbus Avenue and 60th Street. On Central Park West, people know the buildings by name, like the San Remo at 74th, the Beresford at 81st and the Eldorado at 90th.

The west side by the river is quieter and easier for pickups. Riverside Park runs north from 72nd Street above the Hudson, with the 79th Street Boat Basin below the parkway and the Soldiers and Sailors Monument at 89th Street. Straus Park is where Broadway meets West End Avenue at 106th. The Henry Hudson Parkway entrances are at 79th Street and 96th Street. Those two streets show up in many of the routes on this page.

Questions

Questions about Upper West Side pickups

Where should I meet my car at Lincoln Center?

At a corner on Amsterdam Avenue, one block west of the plaza. We agree on the corner when you book. When the audience leaves, Columbus Avenue between 62nd and 66th Streets is packed, and a car waiting there can't move for about 15 minutes. You get 15 minutes of free waiting from the pickup time. That covers the walk to the car.

Why does crossing Central Park matter?

Because cars can cross in only four places: 65th and 66th Streets, 79th Street, 86th Street and 97th Street. Any trip east uses one of them. We choose the crossing from your cross street. It's also why we go north to the 97th Street crossing for LaGuardia.

Is Teterboro easy to reach from the Upper West Side?

Yes, it's one of the easiest airport trips from Manhattan. The Henry Hudson Parkway runs along the west edge of the neighborhood straight to the George Washington Bridge, with no trip across town, and the fare is one flat rate.

Where does the Upper West Side start and end?

From 59th Street to 110th Street, and from Central Park West to the Hudson. That includes Lincoln Square, the blocks around the Natural History Museum, and Manhattan Valley at the north end. For Morningside Heights and Harlem above 110th, and Midtown below 59th, see our Manhattan page. The other side of the park is the Upper East Side.
