Chauffeur service on Staten Island

Four bridges and a passenger-only ferry

Only one road connects Staten Island to the rest of New York City. It's the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to Bay Ridge in Brooklyn. Three more bridges go to New Jersey. The Goethals Bridge goes to Elizabeth, the Outerbridge Crossing to Perth Amboy and the Bayonne Bridge to Bayonne. The Staten Island Ferry runs from St. George to Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan, but it takes foot passengers only. If you take the ferry, you need a second car waiting on the other side.

So everything heading east uses one bridge. When the Verrazzano is slow, the only other way is through New Jersey. Leave extra time for Staten Island pickups.

Getting to the airports from Staten Island

From most of Staten Island, Newark Liberty is the closest of the four airports, over the Goethals Bridge and north on the New Jersey Turnpike. From the North Shore it's a little more than 10 miles. Teterboro starts the same way, then goes north on the Turnpike, or over the Bayonne Bridge. JFK is the long way round, east over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and along the Belt Parkway, about 25 miles from the middle of the island. LaGuardia adds the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) and the Grand Central Parkway after the same bridge. Our comparison of JFK, LaGuardia and Newark explains how the three airports differ.

Our flat rates don't depend on distance. JFK, Newark and Teterboro cost the same, and LaGuardia costs less, whether the Verrazzano is moving or not. Main roads on the island

The Staten Island Expressway is the only road straight across the north of the island, from the Verrazzano toll plaza west to the Goethals Bridge. The West Shore Expressway (Route 440) goes south from it toward the Outerbridge Crossing, and the Korean War Veterans Parkway continues into the South Shore. Everything else is local streets. Hylan Boulevard goes along almost the whole east side, with many traffic lights. Victory Boulevard, Richmond Avenue, Forest Avenue, Amboy Road and Arthur Kill Road carry most of the rest.

Tottenville to St. George is almost 15 miles on local roads. For a 6:00 AM flight from the South Shore, book an early pickup. Your chauffeur drives all of Hylan Boulevard before the bridge. Book both rides of a round trip at once, and we hold the same vehicle class for the return.

Neighborhoods and landmarks

The North Shore has St. George, Tompkinsville, Stapleton and Port Richmond, with the ferry terminal, Empire Outlets and the Snug Harbor Cultural Center a few minutes apart. Grymes Hill and Todt Hill rise behind them. Todt Hill is the highest point in the city, with steep private drives and houses set back from the road. Your chauffeur may not see the house number from the car. Tell us what to look for.

The middle of the island includes Bulls Head, New Springville and Willowbrook, with the College of Staten Island and Staten Island University Hospital. The South Shore is mostly homes, in Great Kills, Eltingville, Annadale, Huguenot, Prince's Bay and Tottenville. Historic Richmond Town, the Staten Island Zoo, Fort Wadsworth under the bridge and Great Kills Park are the main sights, and Wagner College is on Grymes Hill.

The North Shore and the railway

Richmond Terrace follows the Kill Van Kull along the north edge, from St. George past Snug Harbor to Mariners Harbor, with the Bayonne Bridge halfway along. Bay Street goes south from the ferry terminal through Tompkinsville and Stapleton to Rosebank and Fort Wadsworth. Clove Road and Slosson Avenue climb over the ridge between them. The Alice Austen House, the Staten Island Museum and much of the island's older housing are on this side.

The Staten Island Railway runs from St. George to Tottenville, close to Hylan Boulevard and Amboy Road. On the South Shore, the nearest station name helps us find you. Inland, Freshkills Park covers the land west of Richmond Avenue between the West Shore Expressway and Travis. Silver Lake, Westerleigh, Castleton Corners and Emerson Hill are in the center of the island. Conference House Park is at the southern tip in Tottenville, and Mount Loretto is on the bluffs above Prince's Bay.
